  • The Sweetest Lesson

    By ChoitalykRuman

Once upon a time in a small village nestled between green hills and golden fields, there lived a cheerful little boy named Arin. He was about six years old, with bright eyes full of wonder and a heart as gentle as a spring breeze.

One sunny afternoon, Arin went to the village market with his mother. After buying some vegetables, they stopped by a cozy little shop at the corner—Mr. Ranu’s Sweet Store. It was every child’s favorite spot, filled with jars of colorful sweets, crunchy cookies, and little toys that jingled when you shook them.

Mr. Ranu, a kind old man with twinkling eyes and a thick mustache, spotted Arin walking in.

He leaned over the counter and smiled, “Ah, what a sweet boy! Come here, little one.”

He took out a large glass jar filled with rainbow-colored sweets and opened the lid with a flourish. The smell of sugar and strawberries floated in the air.

“Dear child,” he said warmly, “you can take some sweets! Go ahead.”

But Arin, to everyone’s surprise, simply smiled and shook his head. He kept his hands behind his back and didn’t move an inch.

Mr. Ranu was puzzled. “Why not? Go on, don’t be shy. Take some.”

Arin looked up at him politely but didn’t take the sweets.

His mother, who had been watching, gently nudged him. “It’s okay, Arin. You can take some, dear. Uncle is offering.”

Still, the little boy stood still.

Finally, with a chuckle, Mr. Ranu reached into the jar himself, scooped out a generous handful of sweets with his big hands, and dropped them into Arin’s tiny palms—so full they spilled a few onto the floor!

Arin’s eyes sparkled with joy, and he clutched the sweets tightly as they walked home.

On the way, his mother smiled and asked, “Arin, why didn’t you take the sweets when Uncle asked you to? You’re usually so quick to grab your favorites.”

The little boy looked up at her with a knowing smile and said softly:

“Mom… my hands are small. If I had taken the sweets, I could’ve only taken a few. But Uncle’s hands are big—so I got much more!”

His mother paused, stunned for a moment—not just by his cleverness, but by the quiet wisdom in his words.

She bent down, kissed his forehead, and said, “That’s a very smart thought, my son.”

    Moral:

Sometimes in life, we rush to grab what we think is best for us, using our own limited understanding. But when we trust and wait for God’s timing—when He gives, He gives abundantly, far beyond what we could ever gather with our own little hands.

God always gives the very best to those who patiently leave the choice to Him.

  • Teaching Children How to Think, Not What to Think

    By ChoitalykRuman

In the rapidly evolving landscape of the 21st century, equipping children with critical thinking skills is more vital than ever. The adage “Children must be taught how to think, not what to think” underscores the importance of fostering independent thought over rote memorization. This approach prepares young minds to navigate the complexities of modern life with confidence and adaptability.

The Problem with Teaching “What to Think”

Traditional education systems often emphasize the memorization of facts and adherence to established viewpoints. While this method ensures a foundational knowledge base, it can stifle creativity and critical thinking. Children trained in this manner may excel in standardized tests but struggle with real-world problem-solving and innovation.

    1. Limited Perspective: By focusing on “what to think,” education systems can inadvertently limit children’s perspectives. They might become adept at recalling information but less skilled at questioning, analyzing, and synthesizing new ideas.
    2. Lack of Adaptability: The world is changing at an unprecedented pace. A curriculum that emphasizes fixed knowledge does not prepare children to adapt to new information and shifting paradigms. They need to learn how to learn, not just what to learn.
    3. Dependency: Children taught what to think may become dependent on external authorities for direction and validation. This dependency can hinder their ability to make independent decisions and trust their own judgment.

The Benefits of Teaching “How to Think”

Fostering critical thinking from an early age nurtures inquisitive, self-reliant individuals capable of thriving in diverse environments. Here’s how teaching children how to think can transform their learning experience:

    1. Encourages Inquiry: When children are encouraged to ask questions and explore multiple answers, they develop a habit of inquiry. This curiosity drives lifelong learning and a deeper understanding of the world.
    2. Promotes Problem-Solving Skills: Critical thinking involves analyzing situations, identifying problems, and brainstorming solutions. These skills are crucial for personal and professional success in any field.
    3. Builds Confidence: Children who learn to think for themselves develop confidence in their abilities. They are more likely to take initiative, voice their opinions, and stand up for their beliefs.
    4. Fosters Creativity: Encouraging children to think critically opens the door to creativity. They learn to approach problems from different angles and come up with innovative solutions.

    Strategies for Teaching Critical Thinking

Implementing a curriculum that emphasizes how to think requires a shift in teaching methods and classroom dynamics. Here are some effective strategies:

    1. Socratic Method: Engage children in discussions that encourage them to ask questions and explore ideas deeply. The Socratic method helps students develop reasoning skills and understand different viewpoints.
    2. Problem-Based Learning: Present real-world problems and guide students through the process of finding solutions. This method not only teaches critical thinking but also demonstrates the practical application of knowledge.
    3. Encourage Debate: Create a classroom environment where healthy debates are encouraged. This practice helps students articulate their thoughts, consider opposing views, and refine their arguments.
    4. Teach Metacognition: Help students become aware of their own thinking processes. Teaching them to reflect on how they learn and solve problems can improve their cognitive skills and self-awareness.
    5. Use Open-Ended Questions: Instead of questions that have a single correct answer, use open-ended questions that require students to think critically and justify their responses.

    Conclusion

In a world where information is abundant and constantly evolving, teaching children how to think is more valuable than teaching them what to think. By fostering critical thinking skills, we prepare the next generation to be adaptable, innovative, and resilient. They will be equipped not only to face the challenges of the future but to shape it with confidence and creativity. As educators, parents, and mentors, it is our responsibility to nurture these skills and create an environment where young minds can thrive.

  • Reclaiming Your Voice: When the Inner Critic Isn’t Really You

Have you ever noticed how, in quiet moments, a harsh voice suddenly rises from within—telling you you’re not enough, that you’re failing, or that you’re unworthy of love, success, or peace?

This voice doesn’t come from nowhere. Often, it’s a lingering echo of the past. It may sound like your own voice now, but its roots are usually tangled in the words of others—parents who shamed, teachers who dismissed, friends who betrayed, or a society that told you to shrink to fit in.

It’s the voice of the inner critic. And for many of us, it’s been speaking for so long that we mistake it for our truth.

But here’s what’s important to remember:
You are no longer that powerless child who had no choice but to listen.
You’re not that person stuck in silence, afraid of being misunderstood or rejected. You are here, now—awake, aware, and free to choose the story you tell yourself.

The Inner Critic is a Shadow, Not a Truth

Spiritual traditions across the world remind us that we are not our thoughts. We are the awareness behind them. Rumi, the great Sufi mystic, once wrote, “Don’t get lost in your pain, know that one day your pain will become your cure.”

The inner critic is part of that pain. But it can also be the doorway to your healing. When you recognize that this voice is borrowed, inherited, or conditioned, you loosen its grip. You begin to see it for what it is—a shadow, not the sun.

Honoring the Wound, Not Living From It

This journey isn’t about silencing the inner critic with force. It’s about listening with compassion, understanding where it came from, and gently choosing to no longer let it lead.

    You might say:
“I hear you. I know you’re trying to protect me from pain. But I no longer need that kind of protection. I am safe now. I am strong. And I speak from love, not fear.”

When you speak to yourself like this, you begin to reclaim the sacred space of your own inner world.

The Power to Choose a New Voice

The most beautiful truth is this: You have the power to choose your voice. You are not bound to repeat the narratives of your past. Each day, you can decide to speak to yourself with kindness, to affirm your worth, and to anchor yourself in truth rather than criticism.

This is a deeply spiritual act—because choosing love over fear is the foundation of awakening.

You might start by whispering new words to yourself in moments of doubt:

    “I am growing, not failing.”

“I am learning to love myself, just as I am.”

“I am guided, protected, and never alone.”

“My voice matters. My truth is sacred.”

    Stepping Into Wholeness

When you begin to trust your own voice, something shifts. You no longer seek validation from the world to feel whole. You remember that your soul already holds the wisdom, strength, and clarity you need. The inner critic fades into the background, replaced by a deeper, more loving presence within.

That presence is your essence. It is the part of you connected to the Divine, unshaken by judgment, and radiant in truth.

So, the next time that inner critic gets loud, take a deep breath. Place a hand on your heart. And remember:
You are not that powerless child anymore.
You are a soul in bloom. You have the right—and the responsibility—to speak to yourself with the same love you so freely offer to others.

    You are not broken.
    You are becoming.

  • Time Slips Quietly—Let’s Not Let Life Pass Us

    By ChoitalykRuman

It was a quiet Thursday morning when Sonoma looked out her kitchen window, coffee in hand, and noticed how golden the leaves had turned. The trees that had once been full of vibrant green were now casting soft shadows in shades of amber and rust. She smiled, but a strange heaviness settled in her chest.

“Wasn’t it just spring?” she whispered to herself.

That morning, she realized how quickly life was passing her by. The days seemed to melt into one another. Morning turned into night almost before she had time to sit down. Mondays disappeared into Fridays, and the months… well, they vanished before she could catch her breath. Her children, once clinging to her knees, now lived in cities hours away. Her parents, once so lively, were beginning to slow down.

She hadn’t planned for life to move this fast—it just did.

And that’s the thing, isn’t it? We don’t always see it happening. We think we have time. We tell ourselves we’ll make that call later, take that trip next year, start that project when things calm down. We hold back on saying “I love you” or “I’m sorry” because we assume there will always be another chance.

    But time doesn’t wait.

Sonoma remembered how her best friend, Laila, used to say, “The coffee gets cold, sweetheart. Don’t wait too long.” She thought of the last time they sat on the porch together, wrapped in blankets, laughing over nothing—and how she hadn’t known it would be their last afternoon like that. Life had changed since then. Laila was gone now. Just like so many others Sonoma had loved.

Still, despite all that time had taken, Sonoma wasn’t bitter. In fact, something inside her softened that day. She knew she couldn’t get back the years, but she could show up for the ones still unfolding.

So, she decided to live with more presence. To stop rushing. To stop waiting for “later” to do the things her heart whispered for her to do now.

She began lighting candles at dinner, even when she ate alone. She called her son just to hear his voice. She walked barefoot in the grass when no one was watching. She looked strangers in the eye and smiled, even if they didn’t smile back. She started writing down her stories—just in case her grandchildren wanted to know one day who she really was.

Sonoma chose not to let life slip by unnoticed anymore.

And maybe that’s the message for all of us:
We may not be able to slow time, but we can honor it.

We can fill our days with beauty, connection, and meaning.
We can say the words that matter.
We can stop saving joy for special occasions.
We can stop treating “later” like it’s promised.

    Because it’s not.

The days we live now are the special occasions.

Life may feel long, but it’s really a blink.
And the only way to make the most of it is to start—today, right now—with whatever love, peace, and joy we can carry.

  • Ocean Waves, Laughter, and Lost Shoes – A Weekend to Remember

The best kind of memories are the ones that don’t need planning—they just happen when good people come together in a beautiful place.

Over the holiday weekend, June, her mother, and younger brother set off from Virginia to join her youngest brother and his in-laws for a family getaway at the Outer Banks, North Carolina. The drive was long but full of cheerful chatter, snack bags rustling, and daydreams of sand between their toes.

The house near the shore was full of life. The sounds of sizzling barbecue, happy footsteps, and the giggles of little Nilom, the family’s three-year-old explorer, filled the air. His grandparents doted on him, and his energy lit up every corner of the trip.

One of the most fun moments came when June, her brothers, and their uncle gathered around the table to play the traditional Asian Ludo game. They laughed, teased, and plotted their moves with playful competition. When June won, she raised her hands and grinned like a champion. “I knew I had lucky dice today!” she joked, and everyone clapped—even Uncle, who usually hated to lose.

There was a birthday surprise too—Nilom’s birthday cake, decorated with bright colors and a cheerful cartoon figure, was brought out with candles and a room full of singing. His face lit up as everyone clapped and cheered. It was the kind of joy that makes you forget everything else.

One afternoon, as the waves rolled in and the sky turned soft, June found herself standing quietly by the ocean, enjoying the rhythm of the water brushing the shore and then slipping away again. She took her shoes off and walked closer to feel the wet sand under her feet. Then, with one mischievous sweep, a wave came and tugged one of her shoes out to sea.

“Hey! Don’t take my shoe!” she shouted, half laughing, half surprised. She stood still, waiting for the next wave to bring it back.

    But it never did.

The ocean kept her shoe as a souvenir—and June walked back barefoot, shaking her head and laughing. “Guess the sea needed it more than I did,” she said.

Later, the family picked out seashells—each one a little gift from the tide. Grandpa dug a big hole in the sand, and in a moment of pure childhood fun, they gently lowered Nilom in, burying everything but his head. His eyes sparkled with joy while he shouted, “I’m a sand monster!” Granny couldn’t stop laughing as she added a little seashell crown to his head.

That evening, with the sun dipping low and salty breeze in the air, the family sat close, sharing snacks and watching the sky melt into twilight.

No one talked about work or worries. No one needed anything more. Everything that mattered was already there.

It wasn’t a luxury vacation. It wasn’t a fancy resort. But it was magic—because it was real, and it was shared.

These are the moments that stay with us long after the sand is gone from our shoes—well, at least the shoes we still have.

  • By the Pond, Where Time Slows Down

Tucked away at the edge of a quiet village stood a small clay house, shaded by old neem and mango trees. It wasn’t grand, but it was home—a home that echoed with years of laughter, shared meals, and the kind of love that deepens with silence more than with words.

Behind the house stretched a clear pond, its surface mirroring the soft blue sky. On this warm afternoon, after a simple home-cooked lunch, the couple sat side by side under the open sky. He, with his fishing rod steady in hand, eyes on the bobber. She, sitting close, her hands busy cleaning fresh green vegetables in a basket.

White ducks waddled nearby, occasionally dipping their beaks into the water or rustling their wings in the sun. The breeze carried the earthy scent of clay and water, blending with the faint aroma of coriander and mustard oil from their lunch.

“I think this time you might catch a bigger one,” she said, without looking up, a gentle smile on her face.

He chuckled, not taking his eyes off the pond. “And what if I don’t?”

“Then we still have lentils and rice,” she replied, teasingly. “But the fish would make the evening more exciting.”

They both laughed quietly, the kind of laughter that comes from years of shared memories. There was no rush here—no pressure to prove or perform. Just presence. Just peace.

She rinsed the spinach leaves, letting droplets fall back into the steel bowl with a rhythm that matched the ripples in the water. He glanced at her—noticing the silver strands in her hair, the same hands that had once rocked their children to sleep, now preparing dinner like always, calm and steady.

“You remember our first day here?” he asked.

She nodded. “You brought me here as a surprise. I cried. I thought I wouldn’t adjust to the quiet.”

    “And now?”

“Now, I can’t imagine noise,” she said softly, meeting his eyes.

A duck quacked as if agreeing, and they both smiled again.

The sun began to dip lower, casting golden reflections on the water. It didn’t matter whether they caught a fish or not. What mattered was this—this moment, this rhythm of life they had chosen together. Simple. Whole. Real.

As she stood to take the vegetables inside, he gently caught her hand. “Wait—look at the light on the water,” he said.

She turned, and they watched together—just a minute more—before life carried them forward again, toward dinner, dusk, and the comfort of their clay house by the pond.
